What I liked about Sister Outsider is that it wasn't written for me as a straight, white woman.
I tend to spend far more time wanting to write than I do actually writing.
I finished the book and came away feeling like I needed to create something, or call my mom, or have a good cry, and that is what good poetry does.
It is okay to need gentleness.
Rao made a brave, important choice to focus her work on women, and in many ways, this risk paid off.
No other poet in the last ten years (or maybe ever) has been able to create such a powerful shift in the public opinion of poetry.
Just the thought of sending your work to be published along with "real" writers you admire is just...stomachache-inducing.
My first thought when I finally bought the book was “Oh yeah, this is gonna fuck me up.”
